What is a PDF Writer?

deskPDF Professional is in a class of products called "PDF Writers".  This term was coined by Adobe when they first released their PDFWriter product and the term "PDF Writer" has been used synonymously for PDF software applications which create PDFs using a Print to PDF methodology.

Terms such as PDF Printer, PDF Distiller, PDF Print Driver, and PDF Creator are all typically used interchangeably with PDF Writer.

How do PDF Writers work?

Once the deskPDF application is installed, the deskPDF PDF Writer is shown as an available printer in the "printers and faxes" group under the Microsoft start window.  When installed, a PDF writer can be printed to from any application that supports printing, just as a physical printer.

deskPDF Professional provides additional ways to simplify making PDFs beyond from only the printers dialog.  deskPDF provides access directly from within Microsoft Office; including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Powerpoint, and Microsof Excel with a convinient toolbar button.

Two other convenience features provided with deskPDF Professional are the drag & drop desktop icon and right-click deskPDF access.  The drag & drop desktop icon allows users to drop documents onto the conversion icon to automatically start the PDF creation process. Where the right-click deskPDF access automatically converts a PDF in place automatically named the same as the original document, however with a .PDF extension.
