Adobe has made PDF files a widely accepted standard. You must have a reader application to open PDF files. deskPDF creates PDF files, but does not open or edit them. To open or read PDF files, download deskPDF Reader. Once installed, deskPDF will detect that deskPDF Reader is installed and give you the option to automatically open created PDF files in the reader following creation.

DocQ is the easiest way to annotate PDF’s. To add an annotation to your PDF, simply upload your PDF, and open in the DocQ viewer. The annotations available are on the left hand side of the screen under the ‘Markup’, ‘Shapes’, and ‘Forms’ menus. Available annotations include electronic signatures, the typewriter tool, sticky notes, hyperlinks, shape & drawing tools, and insertion of images. Fillable form fields include text boxes, radio buttons, check boxes, combo boxes, list boxes, and more.

To begin, simply upload the document to DocQ. From the DocQ viewer, select the ‘markup’ tab on the left side of the screen, and select the ‘freetext’ annotation. Click on the document to begin typing. The font, size, and color of the text can be adjusted from the ‘properties’ option on the right side of the screen. With DocQ it is simple to create a form with fillable fields for recipients to fill out and send back. To begin, upload the document to DocQ. From the DocQ viewer, select the ‘Forms’ tab on the left side of the screen to display the available form field annotations. Select the form field, then click once on the document to insert. The forms can be re-sized using the boxes surrounding the annotation, and other options such as size, border, & colors are available from the ‘properties’ option on the right side of the screen. To distribute the form through DocQ, simply select ‘Send’ or ‘Publish’. Under the ‘Permissions’ options, ensure that ‘Form Fill Allowed’ is selected. DocQ employs 256 bit SSL encryption and is the safest, most secure way to send documents over the web. To send a document to a single recipient, click ‘Send’ from the DocQ viewer, or My Docs window. Choose the ‘DocQ Send’ or ‘DocQ Track’ options. Enter your recipient’s email address or DocQ username, and select the permissions of the document. The document will now arrive in your recipient’s DocQ Inbox. The document will be marked as ‘sent’ in My Docs, and will also be accessible from your Sent folder.

The PDF format is the de facto standard for distributing printable documents electronically. DocQ makes it easy to digitally publish an E-book, newsletter or magazine, which viewers can access simply by clicking a hyperlink. As a web application, no special software will be required by viewers, and your publication will appear to all viewers exactly as you designed it. From the DocQ viewer, choose the ‘Publish’ button on the left side of the screen. The default viewer will open the PDF in the DocQ viewer, & the annotation tools available will depend on the permissions set at the time of publishing. The ‘Magazine Viewer’ option will display the PDF as a digital representation of a physical document, complete with the ability to flip pages by clicking and dragging on the page itself.

deskPDF Reader will allow you to fill out forms on your desktop. It will also replace your Adobe Reader, as it will allow you to save your document as well.

PDF's which have been scanned in require Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to edit the PDF.  Scanned PDF's contain only the image of text, rather than actual text.  OCR is necessary to analyze the image and create editable text. deskUNPDF 3.0 features an optional OCR module for editing your scanned documents, or PDF's that otherwise convert as image only.  With the OCR module, deskUNPDF can convert immediately to any of the output formats available, such as .doc, .html, .xls, image formats, and more. Using deskUNPDF to edit a scanned file in Word or Excel, as well as scan directly to PDF or Word is incredibly easy.

Cells with numerical data in a deskUNPDF .xls conversion may be formatted and stored as text.  This may cause issues with calculations and sort orders when working with the file in Excel. To convert these cells to number format, please follow the instructions in the following article.

Because the PDF specification is an open and very versatile format that may be authored by a multitude of vendors, predicting the behavior of every document would be impossible without feedback from our users.  If you are unable to accurately convert your document, you may alternatively attempt to "re-distill" your PDF to a more compliant encoding using deskPDF, in other words convert from PDF to PDF, to be converted using deskUNPDF.

PDF documents that originate from many scanners and drawing applications do not contain any text encoding underlying its visual representation of pixels (dots) or vectors (lines).  In order to recover this lost information, a technique called optical character recognition, commonly known as OCR, must be applied. If you receive an error from deskUNPDF that your document contains no text, you may verify this by attempting to select your text within deskPDF Reader.  If you scanned your PDF, your scanner software may offer native OCR support to achieve the desired result.

deskPDF acts as a printer, and creates PDF files instead of printing to paper. Just about any application that has a "Print" capability (can print to a standard printer) can work with deskPDF. With few exceptions, deskPDF will create an Adobe compliant PDF files from almost any application. deskPDF uses a simple serial number/activation code registration system. Our system must have your unique activation number in order to activate your software. For detailed instructions, please view our Activation Guide. If you purchased a Docudesk product and did not receive an email notification, please contact support. Be sure to include the Order ID and email address used when placing your order to expedite the process.

deskPDF creates a virtual printer on your computer. To use the program, simply print from almost any application, selecting deskPDF' as your printer. This will convert the printer output to PDF format and open the deskPDF program dialog, prompting you to name your PDF file. Alternately, you can use the right-click conversion on many file types from Windows Explorer. See this deskPDF video for more details.

Some systems will require a re-boot after installing deskPDF. This is more commonly required on older versions of Windows.

Many page layout/desktop publishing applications have page properties settings that can conflict with the settings in the deskPDF print driver. Be sure to check the page properties in the application you are using as well as the deskPDF page properties. By selecting Properties–>Advanced from the printer dialog, you can select deskPDF's page size and orientation.

There is a known problem with Microsoft Word producing custom page sizes on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7. This Microsoft Knowledge Base article explains how to make custom page sizes work properly. "PostScript custom page size settings are ignored in Microsoft Word". However, this is not related to deskPDF, as it is an error with Word.

The .MSI installer is provided for enterprise installations requiring 20 or more licenses of either deskPDF or deskUNPDF.

The 1120 error is a generic VBA/Word error that occurs when a printer is not installed or not available. The error means that there was not a clean installation of deskPDF. To correct the error please uninstall deskPDF from your computer, re-boot, download and install deskPDF onto your computer again. If the problem persists, please contact customer support.

This problem occurs with an interruption of right click conversion printing, this causes Microsoft Word to leave a temporary item in the normal.dot file. To correct the problem, open Microsoft Word and click Tools–Macro–Macros. When the Macros dialog box appears, select Organizer. The Organizer dialog box will open. In the Organizer dialog box, select the macro project items tab. In the Normal.dot box select the tmpDDE macro and click delete. Click yes to confirm the removal of the macro.

This problem is caused by variations within the Excel sheet. These differing elements cause multiple print jobs. To correct this problem select all Excel Sheets in the Workbook at the bottom left of the Excel Viewer. This can be done by selecting the first sheet while holding down the shift key. Continue to hold down the shift key while selecting the last Sheet in the Workbook. In Excel 2003 click File and select Page Setup. At the bottom of the page tab you will see an option for Print Quality. Change the dpi setting to 300 or 600, depending on what the setting was when you opened Page Setup. For Excel 2007, and 2010 the Page Setup will be on the Ribbon under the Page Layout tab.

To correct this problem in Word 2003 simply click Tools and select Options. Choose the Print tab and unselect "Reverse print order". For Word 2007 click the Office Button, choose Options, then select Advanced, and find the heading Print, there will be a check box to print in reverse order, be sure it is not checked. For Word 2010, you will click on the File tab in the Ribbon, then follow the 2007 instructions.

If you receive this message you are most likely trying to activate a different version of your software from the one that you purchased. To correct this problem, please visit our download page to download the version of software that matches the product purchased. You may verify which version you purchased by referring to the Docudesk email receipt.

When you reformat or upgrade your computer, you will need to re-activation your software. In this event please email customer support, and give a brief description of why you are requesting a new activation code. Once we reviewed your request we will issue you another activation code.

The activation code that you receive is intially only set to have one activation on it. Although we do allow you to activate on up to 2 computers, we will ask you to please email customer support and give a brief description of why you are requesting another activation. Once we reviewed your request we will issue you another activation code.

If you receive this error, or a similar error, please click Start–Programs–Docudesk–deskPDF –Activate or Upgrade. For deskUNPDF got to Help->Activate to get your installation ID number. Copy your deskPDF/deskUNPDF installation ID number to the clipboard and email it to customer support. We will then manually generate your activation code and email it to you.

If you receive this message, please email customer support with your installation ID number. Your installation ID number is located in the "Activate or Upgrade" dialog box. You will find the "Activate or Upgrade" dialog box when you click Start–Programs–Docudesk–deskPDF 2.5. For deskUNPDF got to Help->Activate to get your installation ID number.
